regret和repent的區別？

兩者都是後悔，懊悔的意思。repent 較多用於抽象的行爲。如: He repented his wickedness。regret 較多用於具體的行爲。如: He regretted telling his wife the bad news so soon。

1. 從含義上看：regret是一個含義很廣的詞，可以表示“遺憾”“後悔”“惋惜”“懊悔”等，它既可用於日常生活中不太重要的小事，也可用在較莊重的場合大事；而 repent 則主要表示“後悔”“悔恨”，有時它還暗示指“悔改”。 She sold her house, but she can’t help regretting it. 她賣掉了她的房子，但她不禁感到惋惜。 I regret to say that you have failed your exam. 我很遺憾地告訴你，你考試不及格。 We repent our decision bitterly. 我們深深懊悔做出了這樣的決定。

2. 從語體和語氣上看，regret 屬常用語；而repent 則屬正式用語，多用於較正式的場合，尤其用於宗教和諺語中。如： Repent (of your sins) and ask God’s forgiveness. 你要懺悔，請求上帝寬恕。 I repent having been so generous to that scoundrel. 我後悔不該對那壞傢伙如此寬宏大量。 Marry in haste and repent at leisure. (諺)草率結婚後悔多。

3. 從是否及物來看：regret 在現代英語中主要用作及物動詞，而repent則可用作及物或不及物動詞，且不及物時，通常後接介詞of。如：

I regret my ignorance on the subject. 對這問題無知我感到遺憾。 I regret that she should worry about it. 我很遺憾她竟會爲此發愁。 He repented it. 他很爲這事後悔。 He repented of it. 他很爲這事後悔。 I have nothing to repent of. 我沒有什麼可後悔的。

4. 從後續動詞的形式來看：regret 後接動詞作賓語時，可用不定式（表示對將要發生的事感到“遺憾”“抱歉”）或動名詞（表示對已經發生的事感到“後悔”“遺憾”）；而repent 後通常只接動名詞(且此用法在現代英語也不多見)，而不接不定式。如： I regret to tell you that he can’t come. 很抱歉他不能來。 We regret to say that we can’t accept your kind offer. 很抱歉我們不能接受你的友好提供。 I regret missing the film. 我懊悔沒有看上那部電影。 I regret spending so much money. 我很後悔花了這麼多錢。 He regretted doing [having done] it. 他後悔做了此事。 They repented staying out late. 他們後悔很晚纔回家。 Allan repented having shot the bird.阿倫悔不該射死那隻鳥。 He repented having stolen the car. 他後悔偷了那輛汽車。
